Active Shooter at San Diego Islamic Center Prompts Police Response

An active shooter was reported at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday, prompting a massive police response as helicopter footage revealed at least one person in a tactical vest appeared to have been shot. Hundreds of police vehicles lined up outside the center minutes after the initial call came in for an active shooter.

Evacuations and Shelter-in-Place

An elementary school next to the Islamic Center was evacuated by police, as were adults still inside the center. Police are frantically searching the neighborhood, going door to door to find the shooter, according to KGTV San Diego. Residents in surrounding neighborhoods were advised to shelter in place in their homes and avoid the area.

Mayor Todd Gloria posted on X: "I am aware of the active shooter situation at the Islamic Center of San Diego in Clairemont and am continuing to receive updates from law enforcement. Emergency personnel are on scene and actively working to protect the community and secure the area."

The San Diego Police Department updated: "The scene at 7050 Eckstrom Ave is still active but contained. We have significant resources on scene at this time. We have established a reunification location at 4125 Hathaway Street, SD, CA 92111."

Governor Gavin Newsom's press office posted: "Gavin Newsom has been briefed on an evolving situation in Clairemont community of San Diego, near the Islamic Center. The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is coordinating with local law enforcement. We are grateful to the first responders on the scene working to protect the community and urge everyone to follow guidance from local authorities."

The situation remains active, with law enforcement continuing to search for the suspect and ensure community safety.
