The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has imposed a ban on the sale of non-vegetarian food at the Chamanpura fish market and in the Holi Chakla area of Asarwa ward. This decision follows an order from the Airport Environment Committee aimed at preventing potential bird strikes on flights operating at Ahmedabad airport.
Background of the Ban
On Thursday, the AMC erected boards at the specified locations announcing the prohibition. Enforcement is expected to commence shortly, and violations will result in complaints being filed. Officials explained that the temporary fish market in Asarwa attracted birds, thereby increasing the risk of bird hits. They added that after the AI 171 crash on June 12, 2025, steps are being taken to mitigate such hazards.
Previous Measures and Proposals
Earlier, the makeshift fish market near the airport was identified as a hazard. A proposal was made to construct a proper facility in Asarwa, but only a temporary market was established. Subsequently, plans shifted to setting up a facility in Makarba. However, the decision on allocating a plot for the market in Makarba has been pending for three years. During a standing committee meeting on October 6, 2022, a proposal for the AMC and Gujarat Fisheries Central Co-operative Association Limited (GFCCA) to exchange plots was presented but not approved.
Official Statement
An AMC official stated, "Following the order from the Airport Environment Committee, a ban has been imposed on the sale of non-vegetarian food in the Chamanpura fish market and Holi Chakla area in Asarwa ward, from Civil Hospital to the old MLA quarters. Boards have been put up regarding this, and enforcement action will be taken soon."
The ban is expected to reduce the presence of birds near the airport, thereby enhancing flight safety. Residents and vendors in the affected areas have been informed about the new regulations.
