Ahmedabad Road Accidents: 803 Deaths in 2025, 10% of State Total

Ahmedabad: A recent report presented to the state government by senior transport department officials has revealed that Ahmedabad city recorded 403 deaths in road accidents during 2025, while the rest of the district accounted for 400 fatalities, bringing the total to 803 deaths. This figure represents approximately 10% of the state's overall road fatalities, which stood at 7,889.

Rural vs. Urban Trends

While Ahmedabad rural (district) witnessed a 20.5% increase in fatalities over three years, rising from 332 in 2022 to 400 in 2025, the city experienced a 17.4% decline, from 488 in 2022 to 403 in 2025. The contrasting trends highlight differing challenges in urban and rural areas.

Concentration of Fatalities

Analysis of the report indicates that two cities (Ahmedabad and Surat) and 15 districts accounted for 60% of the total fatalities recorded in the state in 2025, amounting to 5,036 deaths. The coordination meeting emphasized identifying top accident hotspots and addressing them through the 4Es of road safety: Education, Engineering, Enforcement, and Emergency care.

Vulnerable Road Users

A senior road safety expert from the city noted that analysis of the Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI) 2024 report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) identified pedestrians, two-wheeler riders, and cyclists as the most vulnerable groups, accounting for 92% of total fatalities in Ahmedabad. “Majority of these are termed vulnerable road users, and thus the need of the hour is to ensure adequate road infrastructure. The state government report also mentions the need for continuous, unobstructed footpaths, safe crossings, and traffic calming measures. Mapping of accident hotspots is an ongoing process, and some initiatives have been taken by the city police to control traffic flow,” said the expert. “It is a multi-stakeholder issue, and thus all 4Es must be implemented.”

The report underscores the urgency of targeted interventions to reduce road fatalities, particularly for vulnerable users. Authorities are expected to intensify efforts in hotspot areas and enhance enforcement of traffic rules.
