Alleged USRA Cadres Released After Women's Protest

In Churachandpur, three alleged members of the United Socialist Revolutionary Army (USRA), who were apprehended by Assam Rifles from T Munjang village on Thursday and subsequently handed over to the police, were released later that day following a protest by local women. The trio had been taken into custody on charges of illegal possession of arms.

Protest Erupts After Arrests

As news of the arrests spread in the early hours of Thursday, women from the area gathered at Pengjang village and staged a demonstration in front of an Assam Rifles camp along National Highway 102(B). The protesters blocked the highway, disrupting traffic and demanding the unconditional release of the detained individuals, whose identities were not disclosed by the authorities.

March to Police Station

Later, the protesters marched to the Churachandpur district police station, where the three men were being held. They continued their demonstration, raising slogans and insisting on the release of the alleged USRA cadres. The protesters remained steadfast in their demand throughout the day.

Release After Hours of Protest

At around 3 pm, following sustained pressure from the women, the three men were released. The release came after hours of protest that had brought traffic to a standstill and drawn attention to the incident. The Assam Rifles and local police have not issued any official statement regarding the release or the charges against the individuals.
