The death toll from an ammonia gas leak at a chemical plant in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district has risen to 10, with 68 individuals still hospitalised, according to officials on Wednesday.
Details of the Incident
The industrial accident occurred on June 21 during routine operations at a facility in the Kannigaipair and Manjangaranai area near Periyapalayam. The leak prompted an immediate evacuation of nearby residents and workers.
District authorities confirmed that the deceased include plant workers and local villagers who were exposed to the toxic gas. The injured are receiving treatment at multiple hospitals, with some in critical condition.
Impact and Response
Local emergency services responded swiftly, cordoning off the area and deploying gas neutralisation teams. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has initiated an investigation into the cause of the leak. Officials stated that the plant had been operating under standard safety protocols, but a valve malfunction is suspected.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and are ensuring all affected receive medical care," said a district official, who declined to be named. "A thorough probe is underway to prevent such incidents in the future."
Health and Safety Measures
Hospitals in Chennai and nearby towns have been placed on alert to handle additional cases. The state government has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased. Meanwhile, the plant remains shut pending safety audits.
Ammonia gas exposure can cause severe respiratory distress, burns, and even death in high concentrations. The leak has raised concerns about industrial safety in the region, with activists calling for stricter enforcement of regulations.
