Amritsar: In a weekend sweep, police seized seven foreign-made pistols and 12 kg of heroin smuggled from Pakistan. Four men — Samarbir Singh, 21, Satnam Singh, 23, Tanupreet Singh, 26, and Karanjot Singh, 26 — are under arrest in the case where the cache included two 9mm Austrian-made Glocks and five .30-bore pistols, some of Chinese origin.
Police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said on Sunday that the group used social media to coordinate with Pakistani smugglers. Investigations indicate the weapons were delivered via drones before being distributed to local criminal networks. All four suspects face charges under the Arms Act.
In a concurrent operation, the state's counter-intelligence wing intercepted a heroin shipment near the Amritsar–Chabal Road toll plaza. Punjab's director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav confirmed that the trio held with 12 kg of the drug operated under the direction of a Pakistan-based handler and police had charged them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The crackdown highlights the persistent challenge of cross-border smuggling in the region. Authorities have intensified surveillance along the border and are working to dismantle the networks facilitating these illegal activities. The arrests are seen as a significant step in curbing the flow of arms and narcotics into the state.
