A Turkish-flagged fishing boat was attacked and sunk in the Black Sea, resulting in the death of one sailor and injuries to four others. The incident has sparked fresh concerns over security in waters impacted by the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Details of the Attack
The vessel, named the Duru 67, was reportedly struck west of Sevastopol in Crimea before a rescue operation was initiated. According to Turkish authorities, the injured crew members sustained wounds from shrapnel fragments. They were evacuated by another fishing vessel and later transferred to a Turkish Coast Guard ship carrying medical personnel. One of the injured sailors later died while being transported back to Turkey.
Context and Rising Tensions
The attack occurred just a day after a maritime drone exploded at Romania's Black Sea port of Constanta, prompting the evacuation of over 1,300 people from nearby beaches. These events highlight the escalating security risks in the Black Sea region, which has been a focal point of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The international community has expressed concern over the safety of civilian vessels in these waters. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the attack and to identify those responsible.
