Bareilly: An elderly man in his late 60s was allegedly tied to an electric pole and publicly beaten by villagers after they suspected him of stealing wheat. The incident occurred in Bareilly’s Pahrapur village under Hafiz Ganj police station on the night of May 16.

Video of assault goes viral

A video of the assault on Chandrasen, a resident of Pahrapur village, later circulated widely on social media, prompting police to act swiftly. However, cops refuted claims that he was tied to a pole.

Victim hospitalised, arrested

Chandrasen was hospitalised following the assault. Police said he allegedly broke into the house of one Ajay Kumar and stole a sack of wheat. An FIR was registered against Chandrasen and he was subsequently taken into custody and sent to jail, said SP (North) Mukesh Mishra.
