Nagpur: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday stated that India could face fuel shortages if citizens do not heed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to use oil and gas with restraint. He attributed the potential crisis to disruptions in global supply triggered by the ongoing war in West Asia.
Context of the Statement
Speaking to the media, Fadnavis emphasized the need to understand oil and gas consumption in the context of the country's current situation. He noted that due to the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, a global shortage of oil and gas has emerged. Many foreign countries are experiencing severe scarcity, and prices have risen sharply.
The Chief Minister was responding to a query about PM Modi's recent remarks in Hyderabad, where he urged citizens to use petrol, diesel, and gas with great restraint. Modi highlighted that reduced fuel consumption would save foreign exchange and limit the economic impact of the war on India.
Fadnavis's Warning
Fadnavis acknowledged that the Prime Minister has ensured that supplies are not affected so far. However, he cautioned, "If we do not understand this difficulty and do not use these resources properly, then we, too, may have to face shortages." He stressed that the disruption in global supply chains, particularly due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, has choked crucial fuel supplies and pushed prices sharply higher in several countries.
