Kanpur: Four people, including the groom's younger brother, were killed and three others sustained serious injuries when a speeding truck collided with a van carrying members of a wedding procession late Monday night. The incident occurred around 11 pm on National Highway 34 in the Maudaha Kotwali area of Hamirpur.
Accident Details
The truck dragged the van for nearly 100 metres before coming to a halt, trapping all occupants inside. Local residents and police personnel rushed to the scene and rescued the victims. However, four individuals had already succumbed to their injuries by then. The injured were initially admitted to the district hospital and later referred to a higher medical centre for advanced treatment.
Victims Identified
The deceased have been identified as Shashikant (30), the younger brother of groom Ramakant and a resident of the Kurara police station area; van driver Kamlesh (45); Jeetu (30); and Mohan (24). The injured include Rohit (19), Dilip (60), and Kamlesh (30).
Driver Apprehended
The truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. However, police launched a chase and managed to apprehend him approximately 10 kilometres away from the crash site.
Official Statements
According to District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal, the truck was transporting gravel from Mahoba to Shravasti, while the van occupants were travelling to Mahoba to attend a wedding ceremony. Circle Officer Maudaha Rajkumar Pandey provided further details: "A wedding procession of the Kushwaha community from village Damar in Kurara police station area was heading to village Khaddi Pahra (Mahoba) in Kabarai police station area. Some members of the wedding party were travelling in the Maruti van. As the vehicle reached near Chhirka, a speeding dumper coming from the opposite direction rammed into it, leaving four people dead and three injured. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and necessary action is being taken."
