At least four people have been killed and several others injured after an under-construction bridge collapsed over the Betwa River in Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh, during a severe storm on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred near the village of Gohand, where the bridge was being built to connect two key areas of the district.
Details of the Incident
The collapse happened around 6:30 PM when a sudden storm with high winds struck the region. Workers and local residents were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the site, and efforts are ongoing to locate any trapped individuals. District authorities have confirmed that the death toll may rise as search operations continue.
Rescue Operations Underway
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed to assist in rescue operations. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the incident and directed officials to ensure speedy rescue and relief measures. He has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the seriously injured.

The state government has ordered a high-level inquiry into the bridge collapse. The Public Works Department (PWD) has been asked to submit a detailed report on the structural integrity of the bridge and the circumstances leading to the collapse.
