India Urges Restraint as West Asia Tensions Rise Over Hormuz

India has called on all parties in West Asia to exercise restraint and return to dialogue and diplomacy, expressing deep concern over renewed attacks on commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. The attacks, which occurred on July 6 and 7, 2026, have threatened the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran, raising fears of a broader conflict in the region.

Details of the Attacks

According to reports from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), two commercial ships were struck by unidentified projectiles while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on July 6. A third vessel was targeted on July 7. No casualties were reported, but the incidents have disrupted shipping traffic through the critical waterway, through which about 20% of the world's oil passes.

Iran has denied involvement, while the United States has blamed the attacks on Iran-aligned militias. The incidents come just weeks after the US and Iran agreed to a temporary ceasefire following months of heightened tensions.

India's Response

In a statement issued on July 8, the Ministry of External Affairs said: “India is closely monitoring the situation in West Asia. We urge all parties to exercise restraint and return to dialogue and diplomacy to resolve their differences. The safety and security of commercial shipping and energy supplies are of paramount importance to the international community.”

India has also advised its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to the region and urged Indian seafarers to exercise caution. The Indian Navy has deployed two warships in the Arabian Sea to ensure the safety of Indian-flagged vessels.

Impact on India and the Region

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital chokepoint for India's energy imports, with over 60% of India's crude oil passing through it. Any prolonged disruption could lead to a spike in global oil prices and impact India's economy. Analysts warn that a full-scale conflict would be catastrophic for the region and the global economy.

The attacks have also drawn condemnation from the European Union and the United Nations, with the UN Security Council scheduled to meet on July 9 to discuss the situation.
