Mehran Khawaja calls for global protests against crackdown in PoJK
Advocate Mehran Khawaja has urged overseas Kashmiris and supporters across the world to escalate peaceful protests against what he termed Pakistan's ongoing repression in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). In a video statement, Khawaja highlighted widespread human rights violations, prolonged internet restrictions, arbitrary arrests, and excessive use of force by security agencies.
Khawaja said demonstrations had already been organized in several countries, especially in London, where large numbers of the Kashmiri diaspora gathered to express solidarity with people in the region. Similar programs were held in various cities and institutions worldwide to voice opposition to the crackdown.
Allegations of internet shutdown and security force abuses
Khawaja alleged that authorities imposed a month-long internet shutdown starting June 5. He accused security forces of violence, shelling, arbitrary arrests, and enforced disappearances. According to him, these measures reflect the failure of the ruling establishment to address people's demands through democratic means.
Criticizing Pakistan's security institutions, Khawaja claimed state forces were being used against civilians instead of protecting them. He accused security personnel of using public funds while targeting unarmed protesters, including young people and women. He further alleged that security operations had caused fear and suffering among local communities.
Call for continued mobilization and peaceful resistance
Addressing overseas Kashmiris, Khawaja urged them to continue mobilizing international support. He encouraged residents, particularly in Dadyal and surrounding areas, to participate in peaceful demonstrations despite the security situation. Khawaja emphasized that public unity is essential to counter what he described as state oppression.
Khawaja maintained that protesters should remain peaceful while sending a strong message against tyranny. He urged participants not to lose courage, asserting that the movement for fundamental rights would continue despite the government's actions.
