Karnataka Minister Eshwar Khandre has stated that there is no proposal before the state government to establish a nuclear power plant in the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats region. Addressing concerns raised by environmental groups and local residents, Khandre emphasized that the government has not received any formal proposal for such a project.
Rejection of Kasturirangan Report
Referring to the Kasturirangan Report, which recommended certain restrictions and regulations for the Western Ghats, Khandre said the government had rejected its implementation after considering the opinions of local residents. The report had proposed measures to protect the biodiversity of the region, but faced opposition from communities who feared it would impact their livelihoods.
Government's Stance on Development and Environment
The minister reiterated the government's commitment to balancing development with environmental conservation. He assured that any future projects in sensitive areas would undergo thorough scrutiny and public consultation. The Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its rich biodiversity and is home to numerous endemic species. Environmentalists have long advocated for its protection from industrial activities.
Khandre's clarification comes amid speculation about potential energy projects in the region. The state government has prioritized renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power to meet its growing energy demands while minimizing ecological impact. No further details were provided regarding alternative energy plans.
