An affidavit submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has revealed that ongoing quarrying operations near the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) are posing serious health risks to cancer patients and causing damage to hospital infrastructure. The affidavit corroborates concerns raised by the environmental group NatConnect Foundation, highlighting that dust generated from quarrying activities significantly threatens vulnerable patients, particularly those undergoing chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation.
Health Risks for Vulnerable Patients
The affidavit emphasizes that the fine particulate matter from quarrying can lead to severe respiratory complications for immunocompromised patients. Cancer patients, especially those with weakened immune systems due to treatments like chemotherapy or bone marrow transplants, are at heightened risk of infections and respiratory distress when exposed to such pollutants. The dust can also exacerbate existing conditions and delay recovery processes.
Damage to Hospital Infrastructure
Beyond health concerns, the affidavit notes that the constant blasting and heavy machinery operations have caused structural damage to ACTREC's buildings. Cracks in walls and ceilings, along with disruptions to sensitive equipment, have been reported.
