Sweden's Saab 340 AEW Aircraft Spotted Over Ukraine, Boosting Air Defense

Recent social media footage has emerged, purportedly showing a Saab 340 early warning aircraft operating over an unspecified location in Ukraine. If verified, this marks the first observation of this Swedish-made aircraft in Ukrainian service, as reported by The War Zone website. The video, initially posted on a Russian Telegram account, depicts the aircraft in level daytime flight, clearly displaying its distinctive "balance beam" radar fairing on the upper fuselage.

Background and Transfer of Aircraft

Ukraine is believed to possess at least two Saab 340 aircraft. In May 2024, Sweden, the country where the plane is manufactured by the company Saab, announced it would transfer two such planes to Kyiv. In Sweden, the Saab 340 is designated as the ASC 890 and the S 100D Argus, highlighting its dual military and civilian applications.

Capabilities of the Saab 340 and Erieye Radar

The Saab 340, along with its associated ground equipment, provides detailed situational awareness for both military and civilian purposes, including air surveillance and search-and-rescue operations. However, its primary capability lies in the Erieye radar, mounted atop the fuselage. Operating typically at altitudes of 20,000 to 25,000 feet, this radar can detect air and sea targets at distances up to approximately 280 miles.

Key features of the Erieye radar include:

  • Capability to track up to 1,000 airborne and 500 surface targets simultaneously.
  • "Lookdown" ability, making it particularly valuable for detecting low-flying Russian drones and cruise missiles, which are otherwise difficult to track due to their low altitude and small radar signatures.

The data collected is managed by a mission crew of three: a mission control officer, a combat control operator, and a surveillance operator. This information can also be downlinked to ground stations and other aircraft, enhancing coordination and response capabilities.

Global Usage and Recent Orders

Saab's Erieye AEW/AEW&C system has been sold to nine countries, making it one of the most widely used airborne surveillance systems globally. Primary military operators include the Swedish Air Force and the Royal Thai Air Force. In a significant development, Poland's Ministry of National Defence ordered two Saab 340s in July 2023 for roughly 600 million Swedish Krona, with the contract spanning 2023 to 2025.

This agreement also covered ground equipment, as well as in-country logistics and support services, underscoring the system's comprehensive nature.

The deployment of the Saab 340 in Ukraine could significantly enhance the country's air defense capabilities, providing critical early warning against aerial threats in the ongoing conflict. As global interest in advanced surveillance systems grows, this development highlights the strategic importance of airborne early warning technology in modern warfare.
