Shimla Police Detains Three Drug Offenders for Six Months

Shimla: Three men facing a total of 17 drug-related FIRs will be in detention of Shimla police for another three months to curb repeat offences and dismantle drug networks, said a police official on Monday.

Ranjan Sharma, Vishal Sharma and Ravi Sharma have been detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (PIT-NDPS) Act, 1986, which allows authorities to detain suspected drug offenders without trial to prevent future offences. It allows initial detention of up to three months, which is extendable up to a year with approvals.

All three are repeat offenders under the NDPS Act. Despite earlier action, they allegedly continued illegal activities, prompting stricter provisions. Ranjan, 35, of Dalsar (Kotkhai), has three FIRs; Vishal, 25, of Shillu (Theog), faces five; and Ravi, 34, of New Shimla, has seven FIRs.

With the extension, they can be held for up to six months. Police said such measures will continue to check organised drug trafficking.
