On the fifth day of his hunger strike, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. According to a tweet from activist Abhijeet Dipke, Wangchuk's blood sugar level has plummeted to 60 mg/dL, and his blood pressure is critically low. Dipke warned that if anything happens to Wangchuk, the government will be held responsible.
Health Crisis Escalates
Wangchuk, known for his environmental activism, began the hunger strike to press for demands related to Ladakh's ecological and cultural preservation. The rapid decline in his vital signs has raised alarms among supporters. Medical experts note that a blood sugar level of 60 mg/dL is dangerously low, potentially leading to confusion, loss of consciousness, or seizures if not treated immediately.
Protests and Public Engagement
Alongside the health update, Dipke also shared a photo of himself engaging with protesters in a light-hearted manner, referring to it as "Chai pe Charcha with Cockroaches" — a play on words indicating a casual discussion with activists. He stated that he was taking feedback on how to make the movement "better and bigger." This indicates that despite Wangchuk's deteriorating condition, the protest efforts continue to organize and strategize.
Government Response and Accountability
Dipke's statement explicitly holds the government accountable for Wangchuk's safety. The activist's condition has become a focal point of the protest, with supporters demanding immediate medical intervention and dialogue with authorities. As of now, no official government statement has been released regarding Wangchuk's health or the hunger strike demands.
