Tanker Struck in Strait of Hormuz, Crew Safe
A tanker transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz was hit by an unidentified projectile on June 27, 2026, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The captain confirmed the vessel was struck, sustaining damage to the bridge. All crew members are reported safe, and no environmental damage has been recorded. Maritime authorities are investigating the incident.
US Military Strikes Target Iranian Sites
The United States launched military strikes against Iranian missile and drone storage facilities and coastal radar installations, following allegations that Iran targeted a cargo ship in the same waterway. US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated the strikes were a "powerful response" to the June 25 attack on the Singapore-flagged cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely by a one-way attack drone. CENTCOM noted that the ship was exiting the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast at the time.
In an official statement, CENTCOM said: "The unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violated the ceasefire. Furthermore, Iran's dangerous behaviour undermined freedom of navigation as commerce increasingly flows through the vital international trade corridor." The US military continues to provide safe passage coordination and support to commercial vessels in the area, where approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments pass.
Iranian Reaction and Warnings
Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned that any further aggression would be met with a broader response, according to a message broadcast on state television via Telegram. Iranian state television reported a detonation at Taherouyeh pier in the southern port city of Sirik, attributing it to a projectile impact. US Vice President JD Vance cautioned that Iran would encounter "violence" if it launched subsequent offensives, posting on social media platform X: "Iran signed a ceasefire agreement. We have honoured it. If they have disagreements about how the MOU is being applied, they can pick up the phone. But violence will be met with violence."
Ceasefire Context and Diplomatic Efforts
US President Donald Trump criticized Iran for the drone strike, calling it a "foolish violation" of the ceasefire agreement. Writing on Truth Social, he noted that one drone hit the upper deck of a cargo ship while three others were intercepted. The ceasefire between Washington and Tehran formally began on April 8, but intermittent hostilities have persisted. Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a comprehensive 14-point pact on June 17 to conclude the war, mandating an immediate halt to military operations and committing both sides to a definitive resolution within 60 days. The first round of diplomatic negotiations in Switzerland took place on June 22.
