Why Flight Attendants Advise Against Wearing Black Socks

Former British Airways cabin crew member Kris Major advises passengers to avoid wearing black socks on flights, especially during night travel, because dark colors blend into the shadows and make it hard for crew to see feet extended into the aisle. This increases the risk of trips or injuries from service trolleys or hot drinks.

Visibility Over Fashion

According to Major, the advice is not about fashion but about visibility. “It’s not about fashion. It’s about visibility,” he said, explaining that anything hard to see at floor level is an accident waiting to happen in narrow aircraft aisles. The warning applies primarily to passengers who remove their shoes and stretch their legs into the aisle.

Hygiene Concerns on Aircraft

In addition to visibility, hygiene is a concern. A study published by PubMed Central found that viruses and contaminants can survive on aeroplane surfaces for extended periods. Walking barefoot inside the cabin, especially to the lavatory, is discouraged due to potential contamination.

No Official Airline Rule

There is no airline rule prohibiting black socks. The recommendation is based on safety and comfort for everyone on board. Keeping feet within one’s seating space is the safest option, and wearing lighter-colored socks can improve visibility for crew members.
