US President Donald Trump has initiated Project Freedom, not an operation, to secure safe passage for hundreds of ships trapped in the Persian Gulf since Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz. This vital waterway handles 20% of the world's hydrocarbon needs, and its closure has caused energy price fluctuations and shortages.
US Military Response
Admiral Brad Cooper, Commander of US Central Command, stated that the distinction is clear: US forces are restoring global commerce while Iran's IRGC terrorizes commercial shipping. The US military has a clear advantage with significant firepower concentrated around the strait.
Two US Navy destroyers, USS Truxtun (DDG-103) and USS Mason (DDG-87), were fired upon while transiting the strait, escorted by Apache attack helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. The projectiles missed their targets, according to CBS News. Admiral Cooper flew in an Apache helicopter over the sea, demonstrating US confidence in controlling the air and sea around the strait.
Progress and Attacks
US Central Command reports that two US-flagged merchant ships have successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz. The command has reached out to shipping agencies to encourage further transits. Admiral Cooper noted that US forces have destroyed six Iranian boats and intercepted missiles fired from Iran.
However, missiles from Iran struck port facilities in the Emirati port of Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman, southeast of the blockaded area. Three Indians were wounded in the strike, which the Indian government called unacceptable.
Project Freedom aims to restore the flow of global commerce and ensure the safety of commercial shipping in the region.
