Trump to Hike EU Car Tariffs to 25% Next Week

US President Donald Trump has declared that the United States will increase tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union to 25 percent next week, alleging that the bloc has failed to comply with a previously agreed trade agreement.

Trump's Announcement on Truth Social

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "I am pleased to announce that, based on the fact the European Union is not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal, next week I will be increasing Tariffs charged to the European Union for Cars and Trucks coming into the United States. The Tariff will be increased to 25%." He further clarified that vehicles manufactured in US plants would not be subject to these tariffs. "It is fully understood and agreed that, if they produce Cars and Trucks in U.S.A. Plants, there will be NO TARIFF," he stated.

Investment in US Manufacturing

The US President also highlighted ongoing investments in domestic automobile and truck manufacturing. "Many Automobile and Truck Plants are currently under construction, with over 100 Billion Dollars being invested, A RECORD in the History of Car and Truck Manufacturing," Trump claimed. He added, "These Plants, staffed with American Workers, will be opening soon — There has never been anything like what is happening in America today!"

This latest tariff escalation is expected to heighten trade tensions between Washington and Brussels, particularly in the auto sector, where European manufacturers hold a significant share of the US market. The move could lead to retaliatory measures from the EU, potentially impacting global trade dynamics.
