Oil Tanker Hit by Projectiles Near UAE Amid Hormuz Tensions

An oil tanker has been struck by unknown projectiles while transiting approximately 78 nautical miles north of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The British maritime body confirmed that all crew members are safe and that the vessel is proceeding to its next port of call. The incident comes just hours after the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced it would launch “Project Freedom” on Monday to restore freedom of navigation for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Project Freedom Announced

In a statement, CENTCOM said the mission—directed by the president—will support merchant vessels moving through the critical global trade route. The operation aims to counter recent threats to commercial shipping in the region, which have escalated amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. The announcement follows a series of aggressive actions by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including the deployment of attack vessels and the threat of using unconventional weapons such as “dolphin bombs.”

Escalating Crisis in the Strait of Hormuz

The attack on the tanker is the latest in a string of incidents that have raised alarm in the international community. Earlier, satellite images revealed 40 IRGC attack vessels swarming the Strait of Hormuz, while reports emerged of a bulk carrier being hit in a separate mystery assault. Iran has also issued an explosive ultimatum to the Trump administration, listing 14 demands with a 30-day deadline. Meanwhile, President Trump has reportedly used emergency powers to send billion-dollar weapons to Middle East allies, bypassing Congress, and has hinted at further strikes against Iran.

The situation remains fluid, with the UKMTO warning all vessels to exercise extreme caution when transiting the area. The international community is closely watching developments, as any disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could have severe implications for global oil supplies and economic stability.
