Russia Signals Support for UNSC Resolution on US-Iran Deal

Russia has indicated its willingness to approve a United Nations Security Council resolution that would formalize the final agreement between the United States and Iran, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday. The move comes as part of a broader diplomatic effort to end hostilities in West Asia.

Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova confirmed during a press briefing that Moscow would participate constructively in discussions on the draft resolution once the US and Iran finalize their bilateral agreements. She emphasized that the resolution would be binding on all UN member states.

Key Provisions of the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding

Zakharova detailed that the path to a final agreement is outlined in a 14-point memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 by the presidents of the two countries in a remote format. Paragraph 3 of the MoU stipulates that the parties have 60 days to develop a final agreement, with the possibility of an extension by mutual consent. Paragraph 14 mandates that the final document be approved through a UN Security Council resolution.

"Reaching a final agreement between the United States and Iran is stipulated in paragraph 3 of the memorandum of understanding. It was signed on June 17 of this year by the presidents of the two countries in a remote format. The parties are given 60 days to develop it, with the possibility of extending this period by mutual agreement. Paragraph 14 of the same memorandum provides for the approval of this document by a resolution of the UN Security Council, binding for all state members of the world organisation," Zakharova said.

Russia's Constructive Role in the Process

Zakharova added that once the final agreements are fixed by the US and Iran, Russia would be ready to engage in the process of agreeing on the relevant draft decision of the UN Security Council in the most constructive format. This statement underscores Russia's diplomatic stance and its willingness to support multilateral efforts to resolve the US-Iran conflict.

The remarks follow the conclusion of the initial round of technical talks in Switzerland, which were part of the MoU aimed at ending hostilities in West Asia. Both sides agreed to establish a High-Level Committee and a roadmap toward a final agreement within 60 days.

The development marks a significant step in US-Iran relations and highlights the role of the UN Security Council in formalizing international agreements. The resolution, once passed, would be legally binding on all UN member states, ensuring compliance with the terms of the final deal.
