UAE Announces USD 30 Million Emergency Relief for El Obeid
The United Arab Emirates, under directives from President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has committed USD 30 million to an emergency humanitarian response for civilians affected by the worsening crisis in El Obeid, North Kordofan, Sudan. The aid will be delivered through the UAE Aid Agency, underscoring the nation's longstanding humanitarian commitment to the Sudanese people.
Urgent Needs in North Kordofan
The funding addresses severe deterioration in El Obeid and surrounding areas, where civilians and displaced persons face critical shortages of food, healthcare, safe drinking water, and shelter. The UAE called for an immediate, coordinated response to ensure life-saving assistance reaches the most vulnerable groups.
Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State and member of the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council, stated: "This urgent response reflects the UAE leadership's steadfast belief that people remain at the heart of the UAE's humanitarian efforts. At this critical stage, the focus must remain on protecting civilians, enabling safe humanitarian corridors, and responding to the urgent needs of displaced people and the most vulnerable groups, particularly the sick, children, the elderly and women."
Call for Compliance with International Law
The UAE reiterated that protecting civilians in El Obeid and across Sudan must be an international priority. It urged all conflict parties to comply with international humanitarian law, avoid escalation in populated areas, and ensure the urgent, safe, and unhindered delivery of aid. The UAE stressed that civilian suffering should not be politicized and that international efforts must focus on saving lives and supporting accountability through independent, professional mechanisms.
USD 800 Million in Total Aid Since Crisis Onset
Sheikh Shakhboot noted that the UAE has provided approximately USD 800 million in assistance to Sudan since the crisis began, demonstrating unwavering support for the Sudanese people, the international humanitarian response, and refugees, displaced persons, and affected communities.
Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, explained that the new assistance forms part of UAE pledges to support humanitarian response plans in cooperation with the United Nations and its partners, delivering food, healthcare, shelter, and support for refugees and vulnerable groups inside Sudan and in neighboring countries.
Political Solution Emphasized
The UAE reaffirmed that there is no military solution to the Sudan crisis. It called for prioritizing civilian protection, facilitating humanitarian access, halting escalation, and supporting a Sudanese-led civilian political process to achieve lasting peace, preserve Sudan's unity and stability, and fulfill the aspirations of its people for security, prosperity, and dignity.
