State of Emergency Declared After Back-to-Back Earthquakes

Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez declared a state of emergency on Wednesday after two powerful earthquakes struck the country in quick succession, causing fatalities and widespread destruction. In a televised address, Rodriguez confirmed that lives had been lost, expressing condolences to those who had "sadly suffered the loss of a family member." She did not provide a specific death toll. Emergency response teams have been deployed to search for survivors trapped under collapsed buildings, according to CNN.

Details of the Earthquakes

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck near San Felipe, approximately 284 kilometers (176 miles) west of Caracas, at 22:04 GMT. Almost immediately, a magnitude 7.5 quake hit near Yumare, about 293 kilometers (182 miles) west of the capital. The USGS estimated that the death toll could range from 10,000 to 100,000, stating that "high casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread." The National Center for Seismology (NCS) recorded the earthquake at a shallow depth of 15 kilometers.
