Three members of a family originally from Gujarat, India, were killed in a fire that broke out at a motel in Ohio, United States, on July 2, 2026. The victims were identified as a woman and two children, according to local authorities.
The fire occurred at the Budget Inn motel in the city of Norwood, a suburb of Cincinnati. Firefighters responded to the scene around 2 a.m. and found heavy flames engulfing a second-floor room. Despite their efforts, the three victims could not be saved.
Victims Identified; Family Members Injured
The deceased were identified as 32-year-old Rupal Patel and her two children, 8-year-old Aarav and 5-year-old Anaya. Rupal’s husband, Hitesh Patel, and another relative sustained injuries and were hospitalized. Hitesh Patel suffered from smoke inhalation and burns, while the other relative, a 60-year-old man, was treated for minor injuries.
The family had been living in the motel temporarily after relocating to Ohio from Texas. They were originally from Gujarat, India, and had been in the United States for several years.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. Norwood Fire Chief John Smith stated, "The fire appears to have started in the room where the victims were found. We are working with the Ohio State Fire Marshal to determine the exact cause." He added that the motel’s smoke detectors were functioning at the time of the fire.
The motel had 30 rooms, and other guests were evacuated safely. No other injuries were reported.
Community in Mourning
The Indian-American community in Ohio has expressed deep sorrow over the incident. A local community leader, Dr. Rajesh Sharma, said, "This is a tragic loss. We are rallying to support the surviving family members and will help with funeral arrangements."
The Consulate General of India in New York has offered assistance to the family. In a statement, the consulate said, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives. Our consular team is in touch with the family and local authorities to provide all necessary help."
Fire Safety Concerns
The incident has raised concerns about fire safety in budget motels. According to the National Fire Protection Association, there were an estimated 3,800 fires in hotels and motels annually between 2015 and 2019, resulting in an average of 10 deaths per year. The Norwood fire is one of the deadliest in recent years in the region.
The motel’s management has cooperated with investigators. The building sustained significant damage, and the affected wing remains closed.
