Amritsar Youth Shot Dead in Canada, Family Demands Justice Amid Hate Crime Fears
Shock and profound grief have enveloped the family of 22-year-old Birinder Singh from Amritsar, who was tragically shot dead in Edmonton, Canada. The bereaved family is now urgently appealing to the Canadian government to ensure justice for their son and to enhance safety measures for Punjabi, particularly Sikh and immigrant communities, which they allege are increasingly becoming targets of hate crimes.
Family's Heartbreaking Plea for Justice
Ranjit Singh, the devastated father of the deceased, shared his anguish. Birinder, whose birthday was on March 12, was the only son in the family. Relatives and local residents have been visiting their home in Amritsar to offer condolences, as the family grapples with this immense loss.
"I urge the Canadian government to bring the perpetrators to justice and take immediate steps to curb hate crimes so that no other parent loses their child in such incidents," Ranjit Singh pleaded, his voice filled with sorrow.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Birinder had moved to Canada three years ago on a study visa and was currently working on a valid work permit in the construction sector, residing in Alberta. The incident occurred on March 14 near Edmonton, when Birinder, along with friends, was reportedly on his way to celebrate his birthday. What was meant to be a joyous outing turned into a nightmare in moments.
According to Ranjit Singh, another vehicle began following them. After some time, the suspicious vehicle overtook their car and abruptly stopped in front. An individual inside allegedly rolled down the window and gestured towards the group. When Birinder and his friends responded with a wave, the assailant suddenly opened fire. Birinder sustained a bullet injury to the neck and succumbed to his injuries on the spot, leaving his friends in a state of shock.
Suspected Hate Crime and Community Concerns
The victim's family has raised serious concerns, suspecting that the killing may have been a hate crime. His father described Birinder as an Amritdhari Sikh who proudly wore a turban, believing that his son may have been targeted because of his identity.
Gurwinder Singh, a relative of the deceased, noted that incidents targeting Punjabi Sikhs in Canada appear to be on the rise, adding to the community's fears. Family members remembered Birinder as a soft-spoken, hardworking young man who remained deeply connected to his roots. Known for his humility and determination, he was a source of pride for his loved ones.
Last Memories and Ongoing Grief
Ranjit Singh recalled their last conversation, where Birinder had promised to visit home soon and celebrate properly with the family. His mother and sister are now struggling to come to terms with the devastating loss, their lives forever altered by this tragedy.
As the investigation continues, the family's call for justice resonates strongly, highlighting broader issues of safety and discrimination faced by immigrant communities abroad.
