Tragic Drowning of Andhra Software Professional in US River

A young software engineer from Andhra Pradesh lost his life in a tragic drowning incident in the United States while celebrating his birthday. Singireddy Sai Sree Hari Krishna, aged 26, drowned in the Meramec River at Meramec State Park near Sullivan, Missouri, on Saturday.

Details of the Fatal Incident

Hari Krishna, originally from Piridi village in Bobbili mandal of Vizianagaram district, had checked into a resort with friends to mark his birthday. According to officials, he entered the river for a swim but became entangled in underwater weeds, which pulled him beneath the surface.

"He struggled, went under and did not resurface," authorities reported on Sunday. Crews from the Sullivan fire department later recovered his body, as confirmed by the Missouri state highway patrol.

Background and Family of the Deceased

Hari Krishna moved to the United States in 2023 after completing his BTech from a private college in Vizianagaram. He pursued a master's degree in engineering in the US and recently secured employment at Elessent Clean Technologies in St. Louis, located approximately 130 kilometers from Sullivan.

The youngest of three siblings, he is survived by his parents, Srinivasa Rao, an auto-rickshaw driver, and Ramadevi, a primary health centre employee, along with two married sisters. Residents of Piridi shared that Hari Krishna had recently called his parents, promising to send money for purchasing a small plot and constructing a house in their village.

"He said he would help his parents get land soon," a relative recounted. The news of his sudden death has left his family, friends, and the entire village in profound shock. The family has approached local MLA and minister to assist in repatriating his body from the United States.

Second Such Tragedy in Two Months

This incident marks the second drowning death of a youth from Andhra Pradesh in the United States within a short span. In August 2024, Rupak Reddy Padini, a 25-year-old from Ichchapuram in Srikakulam district, drowned in Lake George, New York, while on vacation with friends. He was a student at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology and fell into the water while taking photographs.

The back-to-back tragedies highlight the vulnerabilities faced by Indian students and professionals abroad, even during recreational activities. Both cases involved young men from Andhra Pradesh pursuing education and careers in the US, underscoring the need for heightened safety awareness in unfamiliar environments.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Hari Krishna's drowning, while the community mourns the loss of a promising individual who had aspirations to support his family back home.
