The Indian Embassy in Washington DC held a mango tasting event titled 'Taste the Tropical Magic' on June 27, 2026, attracting more than 8,000 people. The event showcased India's renowned mango varieties, along with basmati rice, Indian tea, and coffee, offering free tastings to all attendees.
Ambassador Highlights Success
Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, expressed surprise at the overwhelming response. In a conversation with ANI, he stated, 'We were expecting about 8,000 people at RSVP. Our understanding is that number has far exceeded. It also tells us that mango has now firmly and squarely embedded in the custom to the American taste buds.'
Kwatra emphasized that the event was not merely 'mango diplomacy' but a showcase of a tiny fraction of India's culinary diversity. He noted, 'It's essentially a very tiny fraction of the taste of India, which we have tried to showcase here.'
Expanded Offerings and Future Plans
Beyond mangoes, the event featured promotions for basmati rice and Indian tea, including a surprising offering: olive tea from India. Kwatra remarked, 'For the first time, I never knew there is olive tea in India. We had olive tea. All these things are being showcased on a day that is wonderful.'
The ambassador highlighted the favorable weather despite forecasts of rain, saying, 'Even rain god favoured us and it has stayed quite dry for the night. People are enjoying. Ultimately, that's what it's about.'
Call for More Frequent Events
The high footfall prompted Kwatra to suggest that such events should be held more frequently. He stated, 'So this is clearly a message to us that it perhaps needs to be done more frequently than annually. And we also probably need to broaden our basket of things to showcase. So I wouldn't be surprised if you start now seeing food promotion events that are more than once per year, twice per year.'
The Indian Embassy had announced the event on social media on June 23, inviting the public to join at Dupont Circle for a celebration of India's mango varieties. The event was organized in collaboration with local partners and aimed to promote Indian agricultural products in the US market.
