Two Indian hotel operators now face serious criminal charges in the United States. Authorities arrested them for their alleged involvement in a drug and sex trafficking operation based at a Virginia motel.
FBI Raid Leads to Arrests
Federal agents conducted a raid on Thursday, taking 52-year-old Kosha Sharma and 55-year-old Tarun Sharma into custody. This action marked a crucial development in a multi-year investigation by law enforcement.
The married couple operated the Red Carpet Inn in Virginia through their company, Kosha LLC. Court documents reveal disturbing details about their activities.
Illegal Operations on Motel Premises
Prosecutors allege the Sharmas used the third floor of their establishment for drug sales and prostitution. They reportedly kept regular guests on the lower floors while conducting illegal business upstairs.
"Drug trafficking and sex trafficking devastate communities by exploiting vulnerable individuals and fueling violence and addiction," stated Lindsey Halligan, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
She emphasized her office's commitment to dismantling criminal enterprises that profit from human suffering. Halligan added that authorities will continue working with law enforcement partners to hold offenders accountable.
Specific Charges and Evidence
The charges against the Sharmas include conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, with fentanyl being a primary focus. If convicted, they face a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in prison.
Since May 2023, investigators conducted numerous operations at the motel. These included nine prostitution encounters and fifteen controlled purchases of narcotics.
Eleven of those purchases involved fentanyl, while four involved cocaine. This evidence forms a substantial part of the case against the accused.
Additional Defendants Named
Three other individuals face charges in connection with the same operation. Margo Waldon Pierce, Joshua Roderick, and Rashard Perrish Smith allegedly distributed drugs or assisted in running the illegal activities.
This brings the total number of people involved in the combined crimes to five. Each defendant now awaits legal proceedings for their alleged roles.

This case emerges against a notable backdrop in the American hospitality industry. Approximately sixty percent of hotels in the United States have Indian-origin owners.
Most belong to the Asian American Hotel Owners Association, which represents tens of thousands of properties nationwide. These establishments typically operate in the economy and mid-scale segments of the market.
The current charges represent an isolated incident within this broader community. The vast majority of Indian-American hoteliers operate legitimate businesses across the country.
