Indian Student Navya Nelakuditi Dies in US Car Crash, Family Launches Fundraiser
A 23-year-old Indian woman, Navya Nelakuditi, passed away on April 9 while receiving treatment following a severe car accident in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her aunt, Sirisha Nelakudutu, based in Frisco, Texas, confirmed that Navya died at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital after undergoing three major surgeries. The family is now urgently raising funds to cover the costs of sending her body back to India and managing medical expenses.
Background and Accident Details
Navya moved to the United States last year to pursue a Master's degree, driven by a dream to build a career that could support her family back in India. Her parents, described as humble farmers, had invested all their resources into her education. Tragically, she met with the accident while returning home from an internship interview in Michigan. The other passenger involved in the crash survived, but Navya succumbed to her injuries after extensive medical efforts.
Fundraising Efforts and Family Support
In a heartfelt fundraising post, Sirisha Nelakudutu explained that the funds are not only for repatriating Navya's body but also for covering ICU and medical bills, as well as providing financial support to her grieving family in India. Within just two days, the campaign has raised approximately $85,835 out of a target of $150,000, reflecting a strong community response to this heartbreaking situation.
Unrelated Tragedy: Another Indian Student Drowns in Missouri
In a separate and equally tragic incident, another Indian national, Singireddy Sai Sri Harikrishna, aged 26, was found dead in Missouri. He had moved to the US in 2023 to pursue a Master's degree in engineering. On April 11, his birthday, he visited Meramec State Park near Sullivan to celebrate. Reports indicate that while swimming in the Meramec River, he became trapped in underwater weeds, struggled, and drowned. His friends have initiated a fundraiser for his family, which has so far gathered $24,283 out of a $100,000 goal.
Broader Implications and Community Response
These incidents highlight the vulnerabilities faced by Indian students abroad, underscoring the importance of safety awareness and support systems. The rapid fundraising efforts demonstrate the solidarity within the Indian diaspora, rallying to assist families in times of crisis. As investigations continue, both cases serve as poignant reminders of the risks associated with international education and travel.
Authorities are reviewing the circumstances of both tragedies, while communities mourn the loss of these young individuals who had bright futures ahead. The families urge for continued support and prayers during this difficult period.
