Mary L Trump, the outspoken niece of former US President Donald Trump, has publicly mocked a controversial letter sent by her uncle to Norway's prime minister. In the letter, the Republican leader connected America's push to annex Greenland with his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
"Too Stupid Even For Him"
Posting on social media platform X, Mary Trump shared her blunt reaction to seeing the correspondence. "When I saw this letter, I literally thought, 'This is too stupid even for him.' I should have known better," she wrote alongside an image of the document.
Her sharp criticism follows detailed reports about Trump's message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. The letter has ignited fresh controversy surrounding Greenland, NATO alliances, and global security concerns.
Nobel Prize Connection
According to the revealed correspondence, Trump told Støre he no longer feels obligated to focus solely on peace after not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize last year. He specifically blamed Norway for this decision, despite being informed that the prize is awarded by an independent committee rather than the Norwegian government.
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. Interestingly, Machado presented her medal to Trump at the White House just days before this controversy emerged.
Greenland Demands
In the same letter, Trump insisted that the United States needs "Complete and Total Control of Greenland." This semi-autonomous territory currently falls under Danish governance. When questioned later about whether he would use military force to seize Greenland, Trump offered only a terse "no comment" response.
Denmark, which administers Greenland and holds NATO membership, issued a stern warning. The Danish government stated that any US military action against the island would effectively terminate the NATO alliance.
NATO Tensions Escalate
Several European NATO members responded to the growing tensions by deploying small troop contingents to Greenland last week. These forces conducted reconnaissance missions on the strategically important island.
Trump retaliated against these moves by announcing a 10 percent tariff on goods from eight NATO allies, scheduled to begin on February 1. He further warned that this tariff could increase to 25 percent by June if countries continue opposing his plan to take control of Greenland.
Trump's Written Arguments
In his reply to Prime Minister Støre, Trump wrote: "Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace."
The former president also challenged Denmark's claim to Greenland, suggesting no written documents prove ownership. He added, "I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States."
Trump concluded his message by asserting that the world cannot be secure unless America achieves "Complete and Total Control of Greenland." He has repeatedly claimed he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for ending eight wars during his second presidential term.
Family Critic Speaks Out
Mary Trump, a practicing psychologist and consistent critic of her presidential uncle, has previously warned that his actions threaten democratic norms and institutions. Her latest comments highlight the ongoing family tensions and political divisions surrounding the former president's controversial foreign policy positions.
The letter controversy comes at a sensitive time for transatlantic relations, with NATO members grappling with how to respond to Trump's unconventional demands regarding Greenland and his tariff threats against alliance partners.
