Macy's Thanksgiving Parade 2025 Faces Wind Challenge for Balloons
NYC Thanksgiving Parade 2025: Wind Threatens Balloons

The 99th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is set to march through New York City, but strong winds have become a major concern for the iconic giant balloons and floats. While the parade has weathered nearly a century of extreme conditions, this year's gusty conditions pose a significant challenge to the beloved tradition.

Windy Weather Threatens Parade Balloons

According to AccuWeather forecasts, wind gusts reaching between 20 and 30 miles per hour could force the famous parade balloons to fly at lower altitudes along the 2.5-mile route. In more extreme scenarios, some balloons might be kept grounded entirely for safety reasons.

Official parade regulations state that balloons cannot fly if sustained winds exceed 23 mph or gusts surpass 34 mph. AccuWeather Meteorologist Alyssa Glenny confirmed that "winds will be a factor to closely monitor" throughout the event.

Paul Pastelok, AccuWeather's Lead Long-Range Expert, provided additional insight: "The balloons should be able to fly, but they may be kept closer to the ground. If stronger winds forecast for the afternoon arrive a few hours early, plans to fly the larger balloons could be impacted." He also warned that the "wind tunnel effect between buildings could make winds feel even stronger in some spots" along the parade route.

Cold but Dry Conditions Expected

The National Weather Service predicts mostly dry conditions for the Thanksgiving Day parade, though brisk westerly winds will make temperatures feel colder than actual readings. The NWS forecast for the tri-state area indicates "dry but brisk conditions are expected for Thanksgiving Day" with westerly winds gusting at 25-35 mph.

High temperatures will remain below normal, only reaching the mid-40s, while wind chills will stay in the 30s throughout the day. The Manhattan weather snapshot shows temperatures around 29°F (-2°C) with 85% humidity, though wind gusts are expected despite calm baseline conditions.

Practical Advice for Parade Attendees

With the challenging weather conditions, parade organizers and weather experts have issued important recommendations for those planning to attend the celebration in person. Attendees should dress warmly, as temperatures in the 40s combined with gusty winds will create significantly colder wind chills.

Key tips for parade-goers include:

  • Bundle up with jackets or coats as temperatures will feel colder than they appear
  • Monitor real-time balloon updates from AccuWeather and Macy's official channels
  • Prepare for possible delays and altered viewing angles if balloons fly lower

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has only been canceled during World War II from 1942-1944, and weather conditions have never completely stopped the celebration, though they frequently influence balloon heights and safety measures. This year's parade features popular characters including Beagle Scout Snoopy, Super Mario, and Spider-Man, along with 11 marching bands and over 30 clown crews.
