Modi’s US Visit Confirmed for G20 Summit
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to the United States in December for the G20 Summit. Speaking on the sidelines of the IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026 in Washington, DC, Gor stated that Washington would “love to have” PM Modi visit again. The summit is scheduled for December 14-15 in Miami, Florida, marking the first time the US hosts the G20 Leaders’ Summit since 2009.
Interim Trade Deal Expected Soon
Gor expressed confidence that the anticipated interim India-US trade agreement would be finalized “sooner rather than later.” He noted that negotiations are progressing smoothly, though the pact involves thousands of individual items and requires comprehensive legal scrutiny. “Ambassador Greer has the President’s full confidence, and so we are getting close to finalising that. But these things are complex legal matters, and this is not one page. We have thousands of items between our two nations that we are working on,” Gor told ANI.
President Trump’s Engagement with India
The US diplomat highlighted that President Donald Trump remains closely engaged with the India-US bilateral relationship. Gor mentioned updating Trump about his official trip to India and the expanding commercial ties. “I have been with the President for 10 years, so a large part of the conversation was like two friends catching up… but I also told him about my visits to India… I also spoke to him about the growing trade relations. On both sides, we see businesses coming here and going there every week, and it is a win-win situation for both,” Gor said.
Quad Ministerial Meetings and Future Visits
Gor emphasized the need to formalize regular ministerial-level meetings of the Quad. He also revealed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had invited PM Modi during his visit to India from May 23 to 26. “Secretary Marco Rubio invited PM Modi while visiting him… We love to have him back here. And I know he's coming in December for the G20,” Gor remarked.
When asked about a potential official visit by President Trump to India, Gor indicated it would likely happen next year, after the midterm elections. “It's not any time during the midterms. It has to be sometime next year… We would love to make that happen sooner rather than later,” he stated.
Growing Commercial Ties
The ambassador underscored the mutual benefits of the expanding trade relationship, noting that businesses from both countries are increasingly active in each other’s markets. “It is a win-win situation for both,” he added. The interim trade agreement is seen as a key step toward deeper economic integration between the two democracies.
