In a significant moment for the Indian-American community, Pooja Sethi has clinched a decisive victory in the Texas Senate primary elections for House District 47. Her win comes after she publicly confronted and rejected racist comments targeting her ethnicity, turning the negativity into a powerful affirmation of her identity.
Standing Against Hate: Sethi's Unapologetic Response
During her campaign, Sethi faced a hateful post that mocked her poll campaign poster due to her surname. In a bold retort, she stated, "My heritage isn't an insult. It's my story. And like millions of Americans, it's rooted in hard work, faith in this country, and service to our community. If that bothers you, that says more about you than it does about me." This statement resonated widely, highlighting her resilience and commitment to inclusivity.
The Asian American Democrats of Texas condemned the attack, emphasizing that such comments are not legitimate political discourse. In a statement, the caucus said, "Comments like 'Don't India my Texas' are not political critiques or policy disagreements. They are rooted in fear and exclusion, and they send a message that some Texans do not belong. We reject that message unequivocally."
Decisive Victory and Political Journey
Sethi's win was overwhelming, as she received 76% of the vote against 20-year US Army veteran Joseph Kopser, who garnered only 24%. This victory positions her as the Democratic Party's candidate for the November general election, where she will face Republican nominee Jennifer Mushtaler. If successful, Sethi will become the State Representative for Texas House District 47.
Her political experience includes serving as the Chief of Staff to Texas State Representative Vikki Goodwin for four years. Prior to that, she worked as an immigration attorney with Catholic Charities, where she represented families navigating the complex immigration system, advocating for dignity and due process.
Motivation Behind the Campaign: A Mother's Fight for Safety
Sethi's decision to run stems from her role as a mother and her concern for children's safety in Texas. She explained, "I’m running for Texas House District 47 because I’m a mom — and I cannot keep raising my child in a state that turns its back on kids. Every session, we’re told we’re here to fight for children. But every session, I’ve watched cruelty win."
She recounted a poignant moment from last session, where she stood beside a father who lost his child in the Uvalde shooting. The father showed the Chair of Homeland Security his child's school notebook, which had a bullet hole through it. Sethi and others were advocating for the "Raise the Age" bill, which aims to increase the minimum age to purchase certain high-powered firearms from 18 to 21, in an effort to reduce gun violence and enhance community safety.
