UK MP Priti Patel Decries Antisemitic Arson Attack on Jewish Ambulances in London

Indian-origin British MP Priti Patel has issued a strong condemnation of the arson attack targeting ambulances serving the Jewish community in north London, describing it as a "dark moment" for the United Kingdom. The Opposition Conservative MP and UK shadow foreign secretary expressed her outrage on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Patel's Public Response and Community Solidarity

In her statement, Patel highlighted the importance of standing with the Jewish community in Golders Green following what she termed a "despicable antisemitic attack" on Hatzola ambulances. She articulated the profound fear now felt by Jews in Britain, stating, "The fear that Jews feel now in Britain is shocking. It must be meaningfully addressed with serious action." Additionally, she extended gratitude to emergency responders and voiced support for counter-terror police as they investigate the incident.

Speaking to GB News, Patel conveyed her personal distress, noting that the attack was "beyond comprehension" and deeply shaken her due to her close ties with the Jewish community. She underscored the abhorrent nature of targeting a volunteer ambulance service, stressing that the safety and security of Jewish people must be a top priority.

Details of the Golders Green Attack

The incident occurred in Golders Green, an area renowned for its significant Jewish population. In the early hours of Monday, four ambulances belonging to Hatzola Northwest, a Jewish volunteer emergency service, were deliberately set on fire. Authorities are treating this as an antisemitic hate crime, with the blaze causing explosions from gas cylinders inside the vehicles, shattering nearby windows and leading to evacuations.

Approximately 40 firefighters and multiple fire engines were deployed to control the fire, and fortunately, no injuries were reported. The Metropolitan Police revealed that CCTV footage captured three suspects igniting one of the ambulances before fleeing the scene. As of now, no arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing.

Broader Reactions and Concerns

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also condemned the attack, labeling it a "deeply shocking antisemitic arson attack" and asserting that "antisemitism has no place in our society." In response to the incident, additional patrols have been deployed in Golders Green to reassure residents, while community leaders have expressed shock and alarm.

This event has heightened concerns over rising antisemitism in the UK in recent years, sparking discussions about the need for robust measures to combat hate crimes and ensure community safety. The attack on a vital emergency service has underscored the vulnerability of minority groups and the urgent call for action to address such threats.
