Two Arrested After Shooting Outside OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's Home in San Francisco

San Francisco police have arrested two individuals following a reported shooting incident outside the residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in the early hours of Sunday morning. This alarming event occurred a mere 48 hours after a separate firebomb attack targeted the same property, raising significant security concerns.

Details of the Shooting Incident

According to a report by The San Francisco Standard, at approximately 1:40 am PT on April 12, a Honda sedan with two occupants drove slowly past Sam Altman's home in the Russian Hill neighborhood. The vehicle had previously passed the house minutes earlier. As it circled back, the passenger extended a hand out of the window and appeared to fire a shot toward the Lombard Street side of the property. This account is based on police reports citing surveillance footage and statements from the compound's security staff, who confirmed hearing a gunshot.

The car quickly sped away from the scene. However, a security camera captured the vehicle's license plate, providing investigators with a crucial lead. Police traced the car to 25-year-old Amanda Tom of San Francisco. Officers proceeded to the 2000 block of Taylor Street, where they detained Tom and her companion, 23-year-old Muhamad Tarik Hussein, without any resistance. A subsequent search of the home resulted in the seizure of three firearms by the authorities.

Charges and Police Response

Both Tom and Hussein were transported to San Francisco County Jail and formally charged with negligent discharge of a firearm under California Penal Code 246.3. San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew commended the swift actions of the officers involved in identifying and apprehending the suspects. "The SFPD takes crimes involving guns extremely seriously, and anyone committing acts like these will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Chief Lew stated. "I want to thank our officers whose swift actions identified these suspects, took them into custody, and got dangerous weapons off our streets."

Despite the arrests, police emphasized that the investigation remains open and active. They have urged anyone with information to contact the SFPD at 1-415-575-4444 or send a text tip to TIP411, beginning the message with the word SFPD.

Second Attack in Less Than 72 Hours

This shooting marks the second incident at Sam Altman's home within a short timeframe. On Friday morning, April 10, a 20-year-old man from Texas, identified as Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail—a bottle filled with flammable liquid with a burning rag—at the metal gate of the property on Chestnut Street around 3:40 am PT. Security guards at the location managed to extinguish the fire, and the entire episode was recorded on camera.

Shortly after the Friday attack, security personnel at OpenAI's headquarters in the Mission Bay neighborhood made contact with an individual matching Moreno-Gama's description. This person reportedly made threatening statements about the building before being taken into custody by police.

Sam Altman's Response to the Attacks

Following the firebomb incident on Friday, Sam Altman addressed the situation on social media, linking it to broader societal anxieties about artificial intelligence. "The fear and anxiety about AI is justified," he wrote. "We are in the process of witnessing the largest change to society in a long time, and perhaps ever." His comments highlight the heightened tensions surrounding technological advancements and their potential impacts.
