The municipal corporation’s engineering department in Chandigarh has commenced recarpeting work on the V-5 road in Sector 45-A and B, located in ward 34. This development follows the removal of long-standing encroachments that had significantly narrowed the stretch.
Road Conditions Before Recarpeting
Officials reported that the originally 40-foot-wide road had been reduced to approximately 15-20 feet due to illegal encroachments. This caused considerable inconvenience to local residents and also affected students and staff of Dev Samaj College, who frequently use this route.
Action Taken by Authorities
Area councillor Gurpreet Singh confirmed that all illegal encroachments and debris were cleared prior to the start of the recarpeting work. “Once completed, the road will ensure smoother movement and improve the overall condition of the area,” he stated.
Technical Specifications
The road is being laid with a 40mm bitumen layer to enhance its strength and durability. This measure also aims to address recurring waterlogging issues in the area. Officials emphasized that construction will adhere strictly to prescribed technical and quality norms.
Traffic Advisory
The stretch will remain closed during the construction period. Commuters have been advised to bear with the temporary inconvenience and plan alternate routes.
Prevention of Re-Encroachment
Responding to concerns about potential re-encroachment, Singh warned that strict action, including the filing of FIRs, would be taken against violators. He also highlighted the persistent problem of roadside parking by vegetable-laden tempos, carts, and autorickshaws operated by some individuals from nearby Burail village. This leads to congestion and hampers sanitation efforts.
Appeal to Residents
The councillor urged residents to cooperate in keeping the area encroachment-free and maintaining cleanliness. He emphasized that community support is crucial for the long-term success of the infrastructure improvements.
