India's diesel generator (DG) market is projected to more than double to Rs 23,803 crore by fiscal year 2029-30, up from Rs 10,521 crore in FY23, according to a report by Frost & Sullivan. The growth is fueled by rising demand from data centres, infrastructure projects, and electric vehicle charging networks, as industries require uninterrupted power backup.
Key drivers of market growth
The rapid expansion of data centres in India is a primary factor boosting demand for high-capacity DG sets that ensure nearly 100 per cent uptime. Additionally, the growth of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, commercial real estate, manufacturing operations, and overall infrastructure development are increasing the need for reliable standby power. Even a few minutes of power interruption can cause significant losses for industries, making diesel generators indispensable.
Companies poised to benefit
Two DG set manufacturers, Powerica and Kirloskar Oil Engines (KOEL), are well-positioned to capitalise on the growing demand from data centres and other sectors.
Powerica
Powerica offers a wide range of power solutions, including generator sets, wind power systems, and emission control devices. It is India's only integrated manufacturer, providing generators from 7.5 kVA to 10,000 kVA. Since 1984, Powerica has partnered with Cummins India to produce and supply DG sets ranging from 7.5 kVA to 3,750 kVA. The DG set business accounts for approximately 83 per cent of the company's total revenue, making it the primary income source.
Kirloskar Oil Engines (KOEL)
KOEL manufactures engines, generating sets, and pump sets, and is among the top 10 global producers in the industrial and Powergen sectors by volume. In the power generation segment, KOEL designs, produces, and markets a variety of engines and diesel generators. The PowerGen division contributes 46 per cent of total revenue, making it the largest income stream. Other segments include Industrial Business (26 per cent), Distribution and Aftermarket (17 per cent), and International B2B Business (11 per cent). Notably, 90 per cent of KOEL's revenue comes from domestic operations.
Market outlook
The Frost & Sullivan report underscores that diesel generators remain critical to India's industrial and digital development as power reliability becomes increasingly important across sectors. With the DG market expected to more than double by FY30, companies like Powerica and KOEL are likely to see sustained demand from data centres and other key industries.
