India has reopened tourist visa services for Bangladeshi nationals after a two-year suspension, providing significant relief to travellers from the neighbouring country. The decision, effective from June 25, 2026, marks a major step in restoring normalcy in bilateral travel and tourism.
Details of the Visa Resumption
The Indian High Commission in Dhaka announced that it will start accepting applications for tourist visas from Bangladeshi citizens. The services had been suspended since March 2024 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions. According to an official statement, the move is part of India's efforts to revive the tourism sector and strengthen people-to-people ties.
Bangladeshi travellers can now apply for e-tourist visas or regular tourist visas through the official visa application centres. The High Commission has also streamlined the process to ensure faster processing times. Applicants are advised to check the official website for updated guidelines and requirements.
Impact on Tourism and Bilateral Relations
The resumption is expected to boost tourism between the two countries. In 2019, Bangladesh was one of the top source markets for inbound tourism to India, with over 2.5 million Bangladeshi tourists visiting India annually. The freeze had led to a sharp decline in tourist arrivals, affecting businesses in sectors like hospitality, transport, and retail.
"This is a welcome step that will encourage more Bangladeshi tourists to visit India," said a spokesperson for the Indian High Commission. "We are confident that this will enhance cultural exchanges and economic cooperation."
Bangladeshi travel agencies have also welcomed the decision. According to a Dhaka-based travel operator, "The visa resumption will open up opportunities for families and groups to plan trips to India, which has always been a preferred destination for medical, religious, and leisure tourism."
Background of the Visa Suspension
India suspended tourist visa services for Bangladeshi nationals in March 2024 as a precautionary measure during the pandemic. While other visa categories such as business, medical, and student visas were gradually resumed, tourist visas remained suspended until now. The decision to reopen comes after a review of the COVID-19 situation and improved health protocols.
The Indian government has also eased travel restrictions for other countries, but the resumption for Bangladesh is particularly significant given the close ties and high volume of travel between the two nations.
How to Apply
Bangladeshi nationals can apply for tourist visas online through the Indian visa portal or visit designated visa application centres. The e-tourist visa allows stays of up to 30 days with double entry, while regular tourist visas are available for longer durations. Applicants must provide valid passports, photographs, and proof of travel itinerary. The visa fee remains unchanged.
The High Commission has assured that applications will be processed efficiently. Travellers are advised to apply well in advance to avoid last-minute delays.
