Indian Railway Approves ₹381 Crore for Kavach, Electric Loco Facilities
Railways Greenlights ₹381 Crore Kavach, Loco Projects

Indian Railways has sanctioned two infrastructure projects worth a combined ₹381 crore to enhance safety and expand locomotive maintenance capacity. The larger project, valued at ₹206 crore, involves deploying the indigenous Kavach Version 4.0 Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system across 680 route kilometres of the Rewari-Delhi and Shakurbasti-Bathinda sections, including feeder branch lines under the Delhi Division of Northern Railway. The second project, approved at ₹175 crore, will create additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at the High Horse Power (HHP) Diesel Shed in Raipur under South East Central Railway.

Kavach Deployment to Cover Key Northern Routes

The deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 on the Rewari-Delhi and Shakurbasti-Bathinda routes is part of the national rollout on high-density and strategically important corridors. According to the Ministry of Railways, “Kavach is India's indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to significantly enhance railway safety by preventing Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and train collisions.” The system is expected to improve operational efficiency, enhance train service reliability, and support faster, technology-driven movement of both passenger and freight trains on these busy sections.

Raipur Depot to Boost Electric Locomotive Maintenance

The separate ₹175 crore project at the Raipur HHP Diesel Shed will augment maintenance infrastructure to accommodate the rapid expansion of the electric locomotive fleet. The ministry stated that the additional homing facilities will enable better utilisation of existing depot capacity while creating room for future technological upgrades. This investment aligns with the rising freight and passenger traffic demands on the South East Central Railway network.
