MSMEs Need More Than Digital Access

Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) account for about 31% of India’s GDP and are projected to drive 50% of e-commerce growth by 2030, according to a McKinsey report. While digital access is crucial, experts emphasize that MSMEs require comprehensive support including financial inclusion, skill development, and market linkages to fully leverage digital opportunities.

The McKinsey report highlights that despite significant progress in digital adoption, many MSMEs face challenges such as limited access to credit, inadequate digital literacy, and regulatory hurdles. To unlock their potential, policymakers need to focus on creating an enabling ecosystem that goes beyond basic internet connectivity.

Initiatives like the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and government-backed credit guarantee schemes are steps in the right direction, but more coordinated efforts are needed. Industry leaders call for targeted training programs, simplified compliance processes, and enhanced cybersecurity measures to build trust and resilience among MSMEs.

As India aims to become a $5 trillion economy, the role of MSMEs cannot be overstated. With the right mix of digital tools, financial support, and policy reforms, these enterprises can become the backbone of sustainable economic growth.
