Indian Railways to Introduce 24-Coach Vande Bharat Sleeper Train with Enhanced Passenger Amenities

In a significant move to address the rising demand for premium overnight travel, Indian Railways has announced plans to manufacture its first 24-coach Vande Bharat sleeper train. This new train will be produced at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, marking a major upgrade from the existing 16-coach models.

Increased Capacity and Improved Services

The current Vande Bharat sleeper trains, which have 16 coaches, offer a capacity of 823 berths. The new 24-coach variant will substantially boost this to 1,224 berths, providing more seats for passengers on long-distance routes. Railway officials stated that this decision follows positive feedback from the inaugural Vande Bharat sleeper rake, which was launched on January 17 from Malda Town on the Howrah–Kamakhya (Guwahati) route.

The expanded configuration is designed not only to increase passenger capacity but also to enhance onboard services and comfort for overnight journeys. The prototype rake is currently in the design stage, with a target rollout by the end of 2026.

Coach Composition and Passenger Amenities

The proposed coach composition for the new train includes:

  • 17 AC 3-tier coaches
  • 5 AC 2-tier coaches
  • 1 AC First Class coach
  • 1 dedicated AC pantry car

A key feature of this configuration is the inclusion of a full-fledged AC pantry car, aimed at improving catering services during long journeys. Additionally, mini-pantry units and linen storage spaces will be integrated across coaches to ensure efficient service delivery.

Passenger amenities will be comprehensive, featuring:

  • Ergonomically designed berths for enhanced comfort
  • Individual reading lights and mobile/laptop charging points
  • Wi-Fi-enabled passenger information and infotainment systems
  • Vacuum-assisted toilets and improved luggage space
  • Modern interior fittings and special provisions for divyangjan passengers, including accessible toilets and ramps

Advanced Technology and Safety Features

The trainset will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology to ensure safety and efficiency. This includes:

  • Advanced propulsion and control systems
  • Regenerative braking for improved energy efficiency
  • A crashworthy stainless-steel car body compliant with contemporary safety standards
  • Fire safety systems aligned with international norms
  • CCTV surveillance and intelligent diagnostics
  • Integration of the Kavach train collision avoidance system

Designed for a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph, the train will feature air-spring suspension, disc brakes, and enhanced noise insulation to provide a smooth and quiet travel experience overnight.

Focus on Sustainability and Modernization

With energy-efficient systems, predictive maintenance, and remote condition monitoring, the 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper underscores Indian Railways' commitment to capacity augmentation, modern technology, and sustainable, world-class passenger services. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to upgrade India's rail infrastructure and meet the evolving needs of travelers.
