Air India's Operational Turnaround Shows Early Positive Results
Air India's ambitious transformation plan is beginning to show tangible early results, with significant improvements in fleet reliability and enhanced availability of spare parts. This positive development was highlighted by CEO Campbell Wilson during a recent town hall meeting with employees on Thursday.
Enhanced Operational Resilience Under Tata Ownership
Speaking to staff members, Wilson emphasized that operational resilience remains a critical focus area for the Tata Group-owned carrier. The airline has been making steady progress in this domain, with enhanced fleet reliability now becoming visible across its daily operations.
The airline has faced persistent challenges with its legacy wide-body Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft, which had previously led to numerous flight delays and cancellations. However, Wilson reported that both of these legacy Boeing fleets are now showing measurable improvements as reliability upgrades continue to be implemented.
Spare Parts Availability and Modernization Plans
A key factor in this improvement has been the increased inventories of spare parts and critical components. Wilson explained that the carrier has been actively undertaking replacement and upgrade programs for aircraft components to make operations more dependable and consistent.
"More than 50 per cent of Air India's wide-body fleet is expected to be modernised by the end of 2026," Wilson announced during the town hall. The comprehensive wide-body modernization program has been targeted for full completion by December 2028, representing a significant milestone in the airline's transformation journey.
Ambitious Fleet Expansion Strategy
The airline group, which comprises both Air India and Air India Express, is planning substantial expansion in the coming years. Currently operating around 300 aircraft, the group aims to grow its combined fleet to more than 500 aircraft by 2030.
This expansion forms part of Air India's broader transformation strategy, which the airline has been executing since its privatization in January 2022 when it returned to Tata Group ownership. The ambitious plan focuses on improving both operational performance and ensuring sustainable long-term growth.
The early signs of improvement in fleet reliability and spare parts management represent important milestones in Air India's journey toward becoming a more competitive and reliable global carrier under its new ownership structure.
