BEML Bengaluru Accelerates Vande Bharat Sleeper Production with Two More Rakes by March
In a significant development for India's premium rail network, Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in Bengaluru is poised to roll out two more Vande Bharat sleeper rakes before the end of March. This move is expected to facilitate the launch of the country's second Vande Bharat sleeper service, enhancing long-distance travel options for passengers across the nation.
Original Agreement and Revised Deadlines
According to the initial delivery agreement between BEML and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, a total of 10 sleeper rakes, each comprising 16 coaches, were scheduled to be delivered to Indian Railways by March 31. However, sources within ICF indicate that this deadline is likely to be missed due to production challenges.
An ICF official stated, "We anticipate delivering the third and fourth rakes of the Vande Bharat sleeper trains before March concludes. For the remaining six rakes, we are striving to ensure a steady supply of one rake per month thereafter." The official further elaborated that a new tentative deadline for the initial batch of 10 coaches has been set for August, emphasizing the importance of thorough trials, testing, and approvals to maintain safety and quality standards.
Rising Demand and Government Plans
The demand for Vande Bharat sleeper trains, particularly from regions like Karnataka, has been on a steady upward trajectory. The popularity of these semi-high-speed trains, renowned for their modern amenities and enhanced comfort, has prompted the railway ministry to announce ambitious plans for manufacturing an additional 260 rakes in the future. This initiative aligns with the government's broader strategy to expand premium rail travel nationwide, offering passengers more reliable, speedy, and comfortable options for long-distance journeys.
Parliamentary Update and Project Status
In a recent Lok Sabha session, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw provided an update on the Vande Bharat sleeper train manufacturing program. He highlighted that the project is being executed in a phased manner, involving prototype development, trials, and series production by BEML and ICF, in collaboration with technology partners. This structured approach ensures that all safety and performance benchmarks are meticulously met before large-scale deployment.
ICF officials have clarified that the Vande Bharat sleeper project is currently in the design stage. Series production of new rakes will commence only after the completion of the initial batch of 10 rakes, which are crucial for establishing performance standards and securing regulatory approvals. This cautious, phased strategy underscores the commitment of Indian Railways and its manufacturing partners to uphold high-quality standards in advancing train technology.
Future Orders and Focus on Existing Commitments
A spokesperson from BEML confirmed that, as of now, no additional orders for further Vande Bharat sleeper rakes have been placed or undertaken by the public sector undertaking. The company is concentrating on fulfilling its existing commitments in coordination with ICF before considering any future manufacturing agreements. This prudent approach aims to maintain the quality and reliability of the trains while planning for potential expansions in the rail sector.
The rollout of these new sleeper rakes marks a pivotal step in India's journey toward modernizing its railway infrastructure, promising enhanced travel experiences for millions of passengers.
