Bengaluru's BEML to Deliver Two More Vande Bharat Sleeper Rakes Before March
In a significant development for India's rail infrastructure, Bengaluru-based public sector undertaking Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) is poised to roll out two more Vande Bharat sleeper rakes before the end of March. This move is expected to facilitate the flagging off of the country's second Vande Bharat sleeper service, marking a crucial step in enhancing premium long-distance travel options for passengers across the nation.
Original Agreement and Delivery Timeline
According to the original agreement between BEML and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, a total of 10 sleeper rakes, each comprising 16 coaches, were scheduled to be delivered to Indian Railways by March 31. However, sources from ICF indicate that this deadline is likely to be missed due to ongoing production and testing processes.
Revised Deadlines and Production Phases
An ICF official stated, "We expect the third and fourth rakes of Vande Bharat to be delivered before the end of March. For the six remaining rakes, we are trying to ensure a delivery rate of one rake per month thereafter." The official added that a new tentative deadline for the initial batch of 10 coaches could be August, emphasizing the importance of thorough trials, testing, and approvals to maintain safety and performance standards.
Rising Demand and Future Plans
Demand for Vande Bharat sleeper trains has been steadily increasing, particularly from Karnataka, driven by their modern features and enhanced comfort. In response, the railway ministry has announced plans to manufacture an additional 260 rakes in the future, reflecting the government's commitment to scaling up premium rail travel nationwide. This initiative aims to provide more options for long-distance passengers seeking comfort, speed, and reliability.
Government and Project Updates
In a recent Lok Sabha session, Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the Vande Bharat sleeper train manufacturing program is being executed in a phased manner. "The project involves prototype development, trials, and series production by BEML and ICF, along with technology partners," he stated, underscoring the careful approach to ensure safety and performance before large-scale deployment.
ICF officials confirmed that the project is currently in the design stage, with series production of new rakes to commence only after the completion of the initial 10-rake batch. This phased strategy is designed to establish performance benchmarks and secure regulatory approvals, ensuring high standards in new train technology.
Current Status and Future Orders
A BEML spokesperson confirmed that no additional orders for further Vande Bharat sleeper rakes have been placed yet. The company is focused on fulfilling existing commitments in coordination with ICF before entering into any future manufacturing agreements. This cautious approach is intended to maintain quality and reliability while planning for future expansions in the rail sector.
