Coimbatore MSME Association Demands Government Intervention on Raw Material Costs
The Coimbatore Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Association has issued a strong appeal to the Union government, urging immediate action to regulate the prices of essential raw materials. This call comes as businesses face escalating cost pressures that threaten their viability.
Mounting Challenges for Small Businesses
During a crucial meeting held on Monday at Avarampalayam in Coimbatore, association members gathered to discuss the current industrial landscape and the severe challenges confronting MSMEs. The meeting resulted in the adoption of two significant resolutions aimed at addressing these pressing issues.
The association highlighted the dramatic surge in prices for critical raw materials including steel, copper, and aluminium. According to their assessment, MSME units are experiencing severe financial strain as these costs continue to rise on a daily basis, creating unsustainable operating conditions.
Key Demands and Proposed Solutions
Price Stabilization Measures: The association has formally requested the Centre to implement comprehensive measures to stabilize raw material prices. They specifically called for the establishment of a uniform pricing mechanism that would remain consistent for at least one year, providing much-needed predictability for small businesses.
Creation of Raw Material Bank: In an innovative proposal, the association advocated for the establishment of a dedicated "raw material bank" specifically designed to support MSME units. This institution would help ensure consistent access to essential materials at reasonable prices.
Coimbatore's Strategic Importance in MSME Sector
Coimbatore occupies a pivotal position within India's MSME ecosystem. The city hosts numerous industries manufacturing pump-sets, motors, electrical machinery, compressors, and automobile components. These sectors depend heavily on steel, copper, and aluminium as primary production inputs, making them particularly vulnerable to price fluctuations.
The significance of MSMEs extends far beyond Coimbatore. Nationally, these enterprises contribute approximately 31% of India's Gross Domestic Product, account for 48% of the country's exports, and provide employment to nearly 18 crore people across the nation.
Additional Resolutions and Concerns
Reciprocal Trade Benefits: In a separate resolution, the association addressed international trade concerns. They urged the Centre to ensure reciprocal benefits in the proposed US-India trade agreement. Specifically, they argued that if India considers implementing 0% import duty on goods from the United States, it must simultaneously secure 0% duty access for Indian exports to the US market.
Skilled Labor Shortage: The meeting also brought attention to the acute shortage of skilled workers in micro-scale units throughout Coimbatore. MSME Association president T Mani emphasized the urgent need to establish dedicated skill training institutions that can create industry-ready manpower specifically tailored to MSME requirements.
The association's comprehensive approach addresses both immediate price concerns and longer-term structural challenges facing India's vital MSME sector.
