The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract worth Rs 425 crore with Bharat Forge Limited, Pune, for the acquisition of 12 sets of 1.25 MW marine gas turbine generators. The agreement was formalised in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
Indigenous Content and Self-Reliance
The deal underscores the government's commitment to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative, as the generator sets will feature 60% indigenous content. This marks a significant step towards reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for critical naval components.
Boosting Domestic Manufacturing
Bharat Forge, a leading Indian multinational, will manufacture these generator sets at its facilities in Pune. The company has a strong track record in producing high-quality engineering components for defence and aerospace sectors.
The contract is expected to provide a substantial boost to the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem, creating jobs and fostering technological advancements. It aligns with the government's broader strategy to enhance the Indian Navy's operational capabilities while promoting local industry.

Marine gas turbine generators are vital for powering various systems on naval warships, including propulsion, navigation, and combat systems. The induction of these indigenously manufactured generators will enhance the Indian Navy's self-reliance and reduce procurement timelines.
Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh highlighted that the deal exemplifies the MoD's focus on leveraging private sector capabilities for critical defence needs. He noted that such partnerships are essential for achieving the goal of a $5 trillion economy by 2025.

Bharat Forge's chairman stated that the company is proud to contribute to national security and committed to delivering state-of-the-art technology. The first set of generators is expected to be delivered within 24 months, with subsequent deliveries following a phased schedule.
