Massive Explosions and Fire at Faridabad Steel Factory Injure Over 35 People

A devastating industrial accident unfolded on Monday in Faridabad's Mujesar industrial area, where a short circuit inside a steel factory triggered a series of explosions and a massive fire, injuring more than 35 individuals. Preliminary investigations indicate that the blaze originated during steel-cutting operations around 4 pm, with sparks from an electrical fault rapidly spreading to inflammable materials stored unsafely outside.

Electrical Fault Ignites Uncovered Chemical Drums

Officials reported that the exact cause of the blasts and fire remains under investigation, but initial findings suggest that a computer numerical control machine inside the workshop developed an electrical fault. This malfunction produced sparks that raced into uncovered oil and chemical drums kept in the open area outside the factory. Police confirmed that the drums contained Mobil oil and other highly inflammable chemicals, stored without proper covers or adequate safety measures.

As the sparks reached these containers, multiple explosions occurred in quick succession, intensifying the flames and propelling burning material across several meters. The rapid escalation created a hazardous environment that extended beyond the factory premises.

Rescue Efforts and Widespread Injuries

At the time of the first explosion, only five to six workers were inside the Kalkaji Steel factory. However, the injured included people on the road outside and workers from nearby factories who rushed to help rescue those trapped and douse the flames. Tragically, these Good Samaritans were caught in subsequent explosions as more drums detonated.

More than a dozen fire tenders were dispatched to the scene to bring the blaze under control. Firefighters strategically trained water jets on the chemical drums to prevent additional explosions. Thick plumes of smoke spread across the industrial area, causing panic among residents living nearby.

Medical Response and Injury Assessment

Twelve of the injured workers were admitted to BK Civil Hospital, while 23 others were taken to private facilities in Faridabad. A police officer indicated that the total number of injured could be around 50, with some patients transferred to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS for specialized care.

Chief Medical Officer Jayant Ahuja stated that the civil hospital cleared wards and reinforced emergency staff to handle the influx of patients. Based on preliminary clinical assessments, most injuries involve superficial burns primarily affecting the skin. The nature of these burns appears chemical, possibly associated with metallic substances, though this will be confirmed through further medical evaluation.

Ahuja added that some patients suffered respiratory distress from chemical fumes and are being kept under continuous observation. The alertness of officials enabled the creation of green corridors to transfer critically injured workers to hospitals during the golden hour, potentially preventing fatalities.

Rescuers Among the Injured

The rescue operation itself proved dangerous for emergency responders. Ajnesh, a driver deployed with the Faridabad police emergency response vehicle, sustained multiple burns during the operation. Two other police officers who arrived after an alert from the police control room also suffered chemical burns. Additionally, three police officers and two firemen were injured during the rescue bid.

A woman working in a nearby unit reported that the steel factory owner was among those injured. Officials confirmed that at least eight persons were taken to Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS by Monday night.

Property Damage and Investigation

The explosions and fire caused significant property damage beyond human injuries. Several vehicles parked near the factory—including cars, two-wheelers, and even cranes—were completely gutted in the inferno.

Police from Mujesar station cordoned off the area and restricted traffic as senior officials, including SDM Badhkal Trilok Chand, reached the site. Police spokesperson Yashpal Yadav stated that authorities are in the process of registering an FIR and will carry out a detailed investigation to ascertain the precise cause of the fire.

The fire department will also prepare a report examining potential lapses on the part of the factory management regarding safety protocols and storage practices. The State Disaster Response Force was mobilized to conduct rescue operations, highlighting the severity of the incident.

This industrial accident underscores critical questions about safety standards in manufacturing facilities and the proper storage of hazardous materials, with authorities promising thorough investigations to determine responsibility and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
